Master the craft of Serbian Phyllo Dough
with Gospođa Tosic.

The art of making phyllo dough in Serbia is more than just a culinary skill; it’s a tradition rich with history and cultural significance, passed down through generations of women who have mastered this delicate craft. In Serbia, creating phyllo dough is a revered ritual, often associated with the wisdom and expertise of the country’s grandmothers, known as “bake.” This tradition is deeply embedded in the fabric of Serbian life, where food is not just sustenance, but a connection to family, heritage, and the past.

Phyllo dough has been an integral part of Balkan cuisine for centuries, its origins tracing back to the Ottoman Empire. Over time, it was woven into the culinary traditions of Serbia, where it has become a cornerstone of both savoury and sweet dishes. Handcrafted phyllo, made by the skilled hands of elderly women in rural areas, is a testament to the patience, precision, and experience required to achieve its ultra-thin consistency. This age-old method is vital to preserving the authenticity of Serbian cuisine.

At Maison del Gusto, we are honoured to welcome Gospođa Tosic from Serbia, a former chef who brings the rich tradition of phyllo dough making. The delicate art of crafting phyllo mirrors the care and precision we uphold in curating our finest culinary experiences. From the heart of the Balkans, we will witness and participate in the intricate process of making this pastry, savouring its unique flavour and understanding its deep cultural significance.

In this MDG masterclass, participants will have the rare opportunity to learn this centuries-old technique firsthand, guided by Gospođa Tosic. You’ll not only gain the skills to create these delicate layers of dough but also connect with the tradition and heritage that have kept this craft alive through generations. Each fold and stretch of the dough represents the care and attention that go into dishes enjoyed during Serbia’s most significant celebrations and gatherings.

As a special highlight of this experience, we will also be making the traditional burek — a beloved pastry that epitomizes the Balkan culinary spirit. Participants will not only learn how to craft this iconic dish but, of course, will also have the chance to taste it, experiencing the rich, savoury flavours that have made it a staple in Serbian cuisine.

Maison del Gusto is thrilled to bring this immersive and culturally rich experience to our MDG community at the CC Lounge MYS, where the art of Serbian phyllo dough-making will come alive in your hands.
